Thanks, Steve. And often it's not just the actual major that influences us. There are so many tools that I gained by my pursuit of a history degree. I learned how to research, how to patiently dig through "useless" documents to find exactly what I was looking for, how to write clearly...you get the point. As anthropologists, we're trained to see that everything is data. Equally, everything is learning.

Chris,

Well thought out and clearly stated re: certification.

But I'm more touched by your take on how a degree, regardless of when, where, or what, shapes one's thinking. And it does. My last advanced degree was taken in 1977, yet I still filter statements, claims, proposals, and professional ideas through the lens of that experience. It serves me well in two ways:

1. In discerning the "snake oil 'professionals'" in my profession.

2. In realizing what I have to learn that is new, different, and simply not known at the time.

Nice going!

You're welcome, Lisa. For many individuals who are trying to figure out this whole certification (mess?) issue in social media, this Association Now article ought to be a starting point. I think far too many feel that certification can be conjured out of the thin air when we know it takes a lot of work to make it legitimate. Otherwise, its nothing more than a semi-worthless piece of paper stating you've done a little training and little more.
